Rearing

There is a long tradition of using jute for calf covers. The material is warm and strong, with lots of trapped air for insulation and breathability. Our product development team have designed their new Farmhand cover to be quick and easy to fit. There is no neck strap. Just pull on over the head like a jersey, then secure the hind strap. (Dimension is length along back of cover.)
Developed from Shoof’s famous Speedy Feeder calf feed bottle, this drencher uses a standard and well-proven design rigid drench probe. This gives a useful flow-adjustable stomach feeder. The probe assembly (probe with lid) is available separately to fit your standard Speedy Feeder bottle. (Not suitable for Easy Feeder as cap does not have an air inlet).
NB: Full container must not be carried by probe.

Easy Feeder and Speedy Feeder are made by Shoof. Easy Feeder is a single-speed nursing bottle and the Speedy Feeder is three-speed. With Speedy Feeder when you get a real fast drinker, switch to ‘Fast’ and let him go for it. When you have a weak premature-born calf, needing careful feeding, switch to ‘Stop’ or ‘Slow’ and let him take milk as he can cope without drowning. The three speeds control the air inflow to the bottle, and thus the milk outflow. Reduce time wasted on speedsters and prevent drowning weaklings, all using the same bottle and teat.
These feeders also feature intelligently designed bottle with multi-directional easy-grip hand hold. The teat is mounted low in the cap to empty the bottle contents completely. The wide 70mm-diameter neck ensures easier filling and cleaning, and the coarse-thread cap is quick and easy to fit. The wide base gives the bottle maximum stability when standing. Spare teats are supplied as fitted teat/cap assemblies, green cap for Easy Feeder and blue cap for Speedy Feeder, or as bare teat. (Teat replacement needs some strength to achieve.)

The Big Softy makes all the other ‘gravity’ calf teats obsolete. With gravity feeders, (where the milk level is higher than the teat), two issues arise. First is preventing leakage through the teat, and second is whilst preventing leakage still enabling the calf to suckle freely. The Big Softy achieves both these ends. The tip design does not leak, even after substantial use, and yet the tip opens freely as soon as the calf begins suckling. The Big Softy will fit all feeders with 22mm (+/-1mm) teat holes. It is equally suitable for hand-held bottle feeding, or for top-teat tube delivery feeders. Big Softy is protected by Design No NZ405207.

This calf weaner has been most sensibly designed with an easy-to-use wing-nut-secured swinging arm. This gives an opening of 25mm, which is then easily closed up and secured at the required size. Simple. Easiest of all to use. Very reliable and long lasting. Glass-filled nylon. Reusable. Sharp 23mm-long prongs. Width 140mm overall.
This cap fits a Speedy Drencher, Speedy Feeder or Easy Feeder. Its purpose is for spill-free storage of colostrum in fridge or freezer. There is no teat or air breather holes in this cap, so the milk will stay sealed in.
The EXCAL tube and teat stop-valve is a one-piece plastic moulding with a stainless steel ball. The valve stem is 7.7mm o.d., suitable for plastic tube with i.d. from about 6mm to 7mm. Valve length 23mm o.a. Diameter 13mm at maximum. The stop valve can assist the calf suckling. Available as 10-pack only.
Milk Train is the modular calf feeding bucket that is used as a 2-place feeder, or is dove-tailed together to make 4, 6 or 8 place feeders. Milk Train is easy to carry about with the central handle, even when full of milk. The new adjustable latch-strap system makes for quick and easy connection to any type of rail, pipe or wood, up to 40mm diameter, or 150mm deep. Simply pull strap upwards to lock onto fence or gate rail. Milk Train for calves holds a total of 10 litres with two 4-litre individual chambers. Supplied with our famous EXCAL Big Softy teats, complete with intake elbow/valves. Feeders stack with teats on for carry or storage. Place over a central rail to feed two individual pens. Feeder is 42cm long o.a.
This variation on our regular Big Softy teat is for use with 54mm id screw-cap teat-mount fittings.
NB: When mounting, slit should be vertical, with longer teat-tip upper most.
The EXCAL Fast-flow tube-delivery teat was the fore-runner of all modern calfeteria teats for group feeding of large numbers of calves. Invented by Mrs Nan Duffy, the Fast-flow internal shape creates a pump-like effect as the calf bites it. The first biting action closes the base end of the teat, and further mouth closure forces milk out through the tip. Almost the same effects as when the calf is suckling naturally. The Fast-flow calf teat takes standard 11mm o.d. plastic tubing, and should be mounted at the most ideal suckling height for the calves being reared, with the delivery tubing descending into the milk container. EXCAL non-return valves should be used at the bottom of the milk tubes to prevent back-flow. The EXCAL Fast-flow teat is fitted into a 22mm diameter drilled hole, in any plastic or metal container or remote feeding panel.
To ensure maximum antibody protection is given to new-born calves, four litres of good quality colostrum should be fed in the first 12 hours of life. Colostrum quality can vary significantly from cow to cow. This BRIX-scale refractometer enables you to easily test colostrum quality for cow or mare milk. After checking calibration of the instrument with distilled water, two drops of the colostrum to be tested are placed on the glass prism. The instrument is then aimed towards the light and the colostrum level (approx 19% to 24%) is read off the internal scale. Readings above 22% indicate high-quality colostrum. Supplied in a quality soft fabric carry case, complete with sampling pipette, small screw driver and instructions for use.
NB: Some practice, or expert help, may be required to become proficient in use of this instrument.
