Focus on Udder Health
Part of the wave of organic and natural products interesting the world of late is the oil derived from Japanese peppermint. Products using this naturally-sourced oil are becoming ever more widely used on both humans and animals. CAI-PAN Mint is used extensively in Europe and Scandinavia, as well as in other dairy countries around the world. CAI-PAN Mint is an all-natural product which is applied to the udder before, during, or after milking. The application need not unduly lengthen milking time, and improvement should be apparent in 12 to 24 hours. There is no need to withhold milk. CAI-PAN Mint is a cream, supplied in a self-dispensing, hanging plastic bottle.
To ensure maximum antibody protection is given to new-born calves, four litres of good quality colostrum should be fed in the first 12 hours of life. Colostrum quality can vary significantly from cow to cow. This BRIX-scale refractometer enables you to easily test colostrum quality for cow or mare milk. After checking calibration of the instrument with distilled water, two drops of the colostrum to be tested are placed on the glass prism. The instrument is then aimed towards the light and the colostrum level (approx 19% to 24%) is read off the internal scale. Readings above 22% indicate high-quality colostrum. Supplied in a quality soft fabric carry case, complete with sampling pipette, small screw driver and instructions for use. NB: Some practice, or expert help, may be required to become proficient in use of this instrument.
Summer flies are a real pain. They come into the shed with the herd and then hang about in the shade of the milking area, biting cows and people alike. For many years farmers have tried various garden-sprinkler systems to reduce flies and heat. But these are generally employed in the yard, rather than on the milking platform. Cool Cow is the new fly and heat control system from the young New Zealand company Pesky Ideas. Cool Cow is the whole kit you need. It includes 65m of 4mm-i.d. heavy-wall plastic delivery line, plus all the fittings required to plumb it from your washdown pump pressure line. The plastic line is routed around the milking platform, herring bone, or rotary. It is then cut at regular points for the push-fit mister couplings to be installed (up to 30 of). A line cutting tool is supplied. The brass misters are then screwed into the couplings. A main tap and line filter are supplied. With the main tap on, the mist system operates as the yard pump is turned on and off as required. Cool Cow is a great system for control of biting flies, and also for keeping cows cool and comfortable in the dairy. You will see immediate reduction in cow fidgeting, tail swinging, and cups kicked off.

Gently mix this concentrate with clean cold water in a clean container to make ready-to-use mastitis test (RMT/CMT) solution. Mix the 1-litre container with 4 litres of water for enough solution to test approximately 250 cows. Mix the 5-litre container with 20 litres of water for enough solution to test approximately 1,250 cows. NB: Test will not function if mixed with very hard water. If in doubt, mix with rain water only.
Use the 1-litre of concentrate with cool clean water to make 5 litres of ready-to-use solution in the 5-litre container. This will test approximately 250 cows. Use the pump bottle to dispense into the mastitis test paddle.
